TRAIN: Pisa-Lucca, San Giuliano Terme station.
Situated on the southwestern slopes of Mount Pisano, between the courses of Serchio and the Arno, in a plain rich in nature and history, San Giuliano was intensely inhabited since prehistoric times, as documented by archaeological excavations in caves and rock shelters.
Known as a spa town since Roman times, Pliny the Elder described it as pisanae aquae; dellXI mentioned at the beginning of the century, was restored by the Republic of Pisa at the beginning of the twelfth century.
In the nineteenth century, the Baths of San Giuliano would meet famous people who gave special luster to the spa: Lord Byron and Percy Shelley, Vittorio Alfieri, Louis Bonaparte and Pauline Borghese.
